This is pretty cool: the Library of Congress started a project called Chronicling America, in an effort to preserve and digitize old American newspapers.
Currently, newspapers are only available from 1836-1922. I’m not sure if this is because they just started the project and haven’t gotten past 1922 yet, or because of copyright reasons. Anyways, check it out!

Not many newspapers make me stop in my tracks, turn around and pick them up.
This one did.
Making my bi-daily stop at my favorite gas station for a pre-class beverage, I always walk by the newspapers on my way in. Usually I glance at the Des Moines Register, the Ames Tribune and then to the USA Today ? the three papers always on display right below the cash register. It’s rare that I actually pick one up to look at it, let alone buying a copy.
This page one did it.
I saw it, had to know what all the little red “DISASTER”s were all about, and ended up buying a copy, if only just to admire and show to the Daily’s designers for a little inspiration.
Kudos to the man or woman that spawned this design. Hope to be so clever someday.

The front page of USA Today caught my eye; color and repetition does a lot to a viewer.
